Tea Readings

Updated: Jul 3

Tea Reading is one of my Favorite forms of Divination. I enjoy the whole ritual of making tea, enjoying the taste of flavors, The quietness and stillness of being in the moment connection to the tea.

To put it Briefly, Tea has a rich history and has been around since 2737 B.C, It made it to America in the 1600’s. Tea Parlors became popular and the women running the parlors would also do tea readings. The art was traditionally passed down through the generations. Now a days there are Many books on the subject.

I became interested In doing tea readings in 2018, shortly after I expressed my interest my husband purchased The Cup Of Destiny for my birthday. It was that moment that my interest turned into an obsession to a passion. I spent most of my free time studying everything I could about tea, and tea reading. Reading dozens of books and watching many youtube videos.

There are so many different approaches to how Tasseographers read leaves. Being able to read and observe their practices helped me develop my own practice and rituals. It also sent me on a very long hunt to find the perfect teacups and tea pot for my own ceremonies.

My Ritual starts with me starting the water to boil. As it is boiling, I go and create my space. Some readings take place at my dinning room table, or at my alter. It just depends on if I’m doing solo reading or a group reading. I cleanse the area, set up my crystals. Make an offering to my Deity’s and ask for their help with the reading.

Once the water is done boiling, I will let it sit for a moment, preparing me tea cup with the loose tea leaves. After I pour the water into my cup I chant over it. Then meditate on what I’m seeking. Once  the tea has steeped and cooled slightly. I Drink my tea till there is a little bit of liquid is left. I swirl my cup 3 times, place the saucer on the cup, turn over an spin 3 times, ending with 3 taps on the bottom. I then let the cup sit for about 2 minutes. After time is up I flip the cup over and read the symbols that jump out of the cup.

One common question that is asked: How often can you have your leaves read?

There are different thoughts on this. One of the books I first read on the subject stated that you should only do a tea reading once a year. I thought that was strange because its very hard to gain the experience when you can only practice the art once a year. So I felt like I had to do further research, before I started doing reading for others.

Upon further research I  learned that many different practitioners had varying degrees of opinions. For me personally I feel like you can consult the teal leaves like you would any divination method.

Now when I say  “Wanna talk about it over tea”, it has so much more meaning. Since the tea will be talking as well.  Please let me know your favorite type of tea.
